Amazon enters fresh food deliveries with UK supermarket giant

Amazon enters fresh food deliveries with UK supermarket giantAmazon has launched its biggest foray into food outside of the United States with a deal with British supermarket Morrisons to offer fresh and frozen goods to customers, in some places as quickly as under one hour.

Enabling the online retail giant to compete with Britain's biggest supermarket stores and smallest local shops, the deal opens another front on Amazon's assault on the £178 billion ($247 billion) British grocery market, already hammered by a brutal price war and changing shopping habits.

Amazon will now add hundreds of fresh and frozen products to its existing offering of packaged grocery goods, setting it up to take on Tesco, Sainsbury's and Wal-Mart's Asda, as well as online specialist Ocado, in one of the world's most developed online retail markets.

"The advance of Amazon as a participant in UK grocery is a potential challenge to the whole trade, in time," Shore Capital retail analyst Clive Black said on Monday.

The tie-up boosted shares of Morrisons, Britain's fourth largest supermarket, which has been a laggard in online sales. Since 2013 it has outsourced logistics for its own online food business to Ocado.

Morrisons shares rose 5.6 per cent. Those of Ocado fell 9.3 per cent on fears the deal would increase competition and reduce the likelihood that Amazon could one day buy it. Market leader Tesco's shares fell by 3 percent.

"Tesco could soon be about to find out what it's like to be David rather than Goliath," Retail Vision consultant John Ibbotson said. Amazon has a market cap of $261 billion.

Ad Feedback

The UK grocery market has been convulsed in recent years by thrifty shoppers turning to discounters Aldi and Lidl, convenience stores and online shops. The British Retail Consortium predicts that 900,000 retail jobs could go by 2025 as the industry moves online.

Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, launched a fresh food offering in Seattle in 2007 and has moved to a handful of other US cities since then, but it has struggled to find the best pricing model, with fresh food proving one of the toughest nuts to crack.

After waiving the membership fee for several years, Amazon finally said last year it would begin charging customers $299 a year for its Prime Fresh membership in the US.

Its expansion into food in the rest of the world has focused so far just on packaged goods due to the complexity of delivering fresh and frozen products. However, it is keen to extend its offering, just as supermarkets are increasingly competing on its home turf by selling more non-food products online.

RANGE LIMITATION

The Morrisons tie-up stops short of replicating its broader U.S. Amazon Fresh service, which offers about 20,000 chilled, frozen and perishable products and items from local shops that analysts have long speculated Amazon was targeting for the UK.

But it gives Amazon a platform to attack a UK online grocery market predicted to nearly double to £17.2 billion in the five years to 2020, according to industry research group IGD.

It has offered some food and drink items to British customers since 2010, and in November it extended a packaged groceries offer already available in Germany and Japan to Amazon Prime subscription members in Britain. Last year it added a small range of chilled and frozen items to its Prime Now service which offers one-hour delivery in Britain's two biggest cities.

Amazon has also begun surveying UK customers about their use of restaurant delivery services, in what analysts said was likely the first step in an international expansion of a business it rolled out in the US last September.

Morrisons, with a smaller footprint in the more affluent areas of London and the south east of England than Tesco and Sainsbury's, may have gambled that it could cope better with the arrival of Amazon which would typically target those areas.

Morrisons makes half of all the own brand and fresh food it sells, a greater share than other British supermarkets, and has spare capacity to service Amazon's needs.

Morrisons announced separate plans on Monday to extend its own online grocery deliveries to the whole of the UK, in agreement with Ocado. It would take space in a new Ocado London warehouse while Ocado will provide Morrisons with software to fulfil online orders from its own stores.

For Morrisons, a tie-up with outside giants like Amazon might be described as "letting the barbarians in", analysts at brokerage Bernstein said.

Nevertheless, the deal could be "a convenient divide-and conquer outcome where Amazon and Morrisons specialise where they are best and support each other mutually", Bernstein said.

"Morrisons may feel that Amazon isn't really a threat for its smaller stores in the North of England; on the contrary on our recent store visit, we saw a nice new shiny Amazon locker unit for picking up Amazon parcels."

This is the true story of how Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook, and it wasn't to find girls - GoFrnzy.com

This is the true story of how Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook, and it wasn't to find girls

This is the true story of how Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook, and it wasn't to find girls

This is the true story of how Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook, and it wasn't to find girls

There's the Hollywood version of Facebook's founding, and then the real version.

In the Hollywood-stylized version, a Harvard student needed a tool to date girls.

The real version couldn't be further from the truth, Mark Zuckerberg told Mathias Dopfner in an interview with "Die Welt am Sonntag."

At the time, he already had a girlfriend - his now-wife Priscilla Chan - and he was obsessed with the internet. Google was great for searching for news and Wikipedia was great for searching for reference material, but there was a gap.

"There was no tool where you could go and learn about other people. I didn't know how to build that so instead I started building little tools," Zuckerberg told Dopfner.

He built a small tool called Coursematch where people could list what classes they were taking. He did build the Facematch tool, as seen in "The Social Network", but that was just a prank, he says.

Instead, the roots of Facebook go back to a college kid spending too much time programming and not enough time paying attention in class. Here's how Zuckerberg turned a study tool into a social network, and why no one else did it.

Mathias Dopfner: But how did [Coursematch] become Facebook?

Mark Zuckerberg: For the final the class - called the "Rome of Augustus", it was an art history class - there were all theses pieces of art in the class and they were going to show you a handful and you would need to write an essay about the historical significance of that piece of art.

I hadn't paid much attention in the class because I was programming other things so when it came time for the final I was like oh I am screwed, I don't know any of this stuff.

So as a study tool I built a little service that showed you at random one of the pieces of art and let you enter what you thought was significant from an art history perspective. So I sent it out to the email list for the class and said hey I have a study tool, and everyone just filled in what is significant about all the pieces of art and it ended up being this great social study tool.

I think the grades on the test that year were higher than they had been in the past. So there were all these different projects, I probably did like 10 different things like this when I was at Harvard. I thought I should put some of this stuff together to create a tool where people can share whatever they want with the people around them. And that was how the first version of Facebook came.

Dopfner: How long did the development take?

Zuckerberg: It only took me two weeks to build the first version of Facebook because I had so much stuff before then.

Dopfner: And of course, you probably hadn't the idea that this could transform into a three hundred billion dollar company?

Zuckerberg: No, not at all.

Dopfner: When did you sense that it could be really a big thing?

Zuckerberg: You know I actually remember very specifically the night that I launched Facebook at Harvard. I used to go out to get pizza with a friend who I did all my computer science homework with. And I remember talking to him and saying I am so happy we have this at Harvard because now our community can be connected but one day someone is going to build this for the world.

And I didn't even think it might be us. It was not like, oh I hope we can turn this into something big. In my mind there was no way this is going to be us. It was going to be someone else we are just college students. When I look back on the last twelve years, what has been the most surprising it's that no one else did it. And I ask myself, why no one else did it.

Dopfner: Why?

Zuckerberg: I just think it's because there were all these little reasons not to do it. You know people at every step of the way said "Oh that's just for young people" so they didn't work on it as much as they could. Or, "Fine, a bunch of people are using it, but it will never make any money." Or, "Oh it works in the US but it is not going to work around the world." Or, "Oh it works but it is not going to work on mobile." All these different reasons, you know how it is.

Dopfner: And you just did it.

Zuckerberg: Yes.

That was only the beginning of Facebook. Now the 12-year-old social network has grown into a company investing in the future, from artificial intelligence to virtual reality

7:30 am: The event provides us an opportunity to reflect on the proposals and promises that were made during last year’s Budget. We looked at some of them and checked the status of their implementation. Here’s what we found.

7:00 am: Here’s some interesting information. For Budget 2016-17, the government invited suggestions from citizens through Twitter for the first time, even conducting a series of polls to gauge public priorities and expectations from the Budget.

Here are some stories from The Hindu’s Focus Budget series and opinion pages:

— Suneet Reddy, MD, Apollo Hospitals, asks the Govt. to collect health insurance cess. "One viable way to do this is by collecting a health-insurance cess for general citizens including people below the poverty line and mandating subscription-based contributions from the organised sector. We need health savings funds, as part of salary savings, to create a corpus for individuals that would accrue over the long term without adding to their financial burdens." Read here.

— 'Accelerate shift to electronic payments for more revenue'. Global studies have shown the cost of cash to be between one per cent and three per cent of a country’s GDP. Given this, we are encouraged by the Government of India and RBI’s collective resolve to move to a cashless society as outlined in the Digital India vision, argues T.R. Ramachandran, Group Country Manager, India and South Asia, Visa. Full article here.

— Brotin Banerjee, MD and CEO, Tata Housing, says the GST can be a gamechanger for the real estate industry. He also says, "To achieve the objective of ‘Housing for All’, affordable housing projects should be exempted from Income Tax for seven years till 2022 and Excise and Customs Duty which constitutes 15% currently." Read here.

— 'Exempt airlines from MAT'. Ajay Singh, chairman, MD of SpiceJet, says airlines should be exempted from application of MAT till all the accumulated book losses (including unabsorbed depreciation) are set off against future book profits. "All the lease transactions take place outside India and there is virtually no tax revenue on this account to the Government of India. This section should be reinstated with additional benefits to Indian leasing companies and leasing transactions done in India. It will help in smooth leasing of aircraft and aircraft engines in India." Read full article here.

— “While new policy initiatives, which may be announced during the 2016 Budget, may provide respite temporarily, improving the long-term investment environment in India requires the government and regulators to put improving corporate governance firmly on its agenda.” Here are some reasons on why the Budget needs to focus on improving corporate governance.

— Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairman and Managing Director, Biocon, says Pharma and biotech sectormust get its due in Budget. She argues that a Budget that puts PM Modi’s ambitious socio-economic initiatives into action would go a long way in pulling the nation out of its current state of despondency by pushing the development agenda for India with increased vigour and scripting a new economic growth story.

— Here’s another thought. M. Govinda Rao, Emeritus Professor, National Institute of Public Finance and Policy says, “Given the pressing need for financial prudence and the equally pressing need for increasing public investment, the Finance Minister needs to raise additional resources and rationalise and target subsidies.” Read full article here.

— “French politician Georges Bidault had in some seriousness described that “a good agreement is one which leaves all parties equally dissatisfied.” No Budget can satisfy all expectations, much less aspirations. It would be judged on whether the preferred options and the balancing act are credible and compelling.” N.K. Singh, a former civil servant and Rajya Sabha MP, writes on what he expects from this Budget.

Mobile app developed to locate victims trapped during natural calamities

A doctor’s initiative in harnessing technology has produced an application which can help locate a person trapped in debris in an earthquake or other disasters when communications fail.

Pradeep Bhardwaj, CEO of Six Sigma High Altitude Medical Services for Rescue, says his company has developed a software application which can be tracked through the mobile phone.

The concept is based on ham radio used by amateurs to communicate with one another. However, the application developed by Six Sigma, which can be downloaded to a mobile phone, is not for communication but for continuously sending out a signal which can be detected by special equipment.

“The application does not require mobile network or internet connection to communicate. This is based on satellite which will continuously transmit coded signals but which cannot be used to communicate,” Bhardwaj to IANS.

The transmitted signals can be detected within a radius of 50 kilometres.

He said that keeping the security concerns in mind, the application had been designed in such a way that people tracking the signal can get information on its location with accuracy. Bhardwaj said the Telecommunications Ministry had already given them a licence to operate the system.

Six Sigma medical services have been recognised by the Central government, several state governments and countries like Nepal and China for its contribution in saving and counselling thousands of people during the Uttrakhand cloud-burst in 2013, Nepal earthquake in 2015 and China earthquakes, Bhardwaj said.

“The Real Time Location application is made keeping in mind the rescue operations in high altitude areas where mobile towers network or Internet fails being hit by a natural calamity. People or soldiers who get trapped in the debris or snow can easily be helped out using the application,” Bhardwaj said.

Till now, Bhardwaj said, he and his team had saved more than 5,600 victims who were stuck in high altitudes.

The Six Sigma is also known for setting up a base camp at a height of 24,500 feet on Mount Everest during the Nepal earthquake, where they had played a major role in helping the Indian Army rescue people.

Bhardwaj said they would send a proposal on the application to the Health Ministry soon, urging it to get it installed in the cell phones of soldiers and people living in high altitude areas which are prone to earthquakes and landslides.

C.K. Misra, additional health Secretary in the ministry of health, told IANS: “This is a good initiative which will help people in high altitude areas. But, he said, the government would need to look into such applications.”

Bhardwaj claimed the application could have helped track Indian soldiers caught in the avalanche recently in Siachen, had these been installed in their mobile phones./*/[sc:afterFooterAd]

China collecting sensitive personal data through Android apps: report

China collecting sensitive personal data through Android apps: report

Hundreds of millions of Android smartphone users have downloaded photo-collage, karaoke and video-chat apps that send location data and other identifying details back to servers in China, a new report has found.

and

The information is collected by Chinese search and advertising engine giant Baidu, which collects users’ GPS co-ordinates, names of nearby wireless networks and a unique device number that can be used to identify a person’s phone, according to findings contained in a new report from The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs.

That information is stored on Baidu servers. The company says it gives Chinese authorities access to its data in accordance with local laws.

But placing such material in government hands could provide a detailed picture of a person’s movements and contacts, potentially threatening those who anger the Chinese state, such as human rights campaigners or democracy activists, said Ronald Deibert, the lab’s director./*/[sc:afterFooterAd]

Rail Budget 2016: Prabhu has been brave but needs to find remedy for Lalu-Mamata hangover - GoFrnzy.com

Rail Budget 2016: Prabhu has been brave but needs to find remedy for Lalu-Mamata hangover

Rail Budget 2016: Prabhu has been brave but needs to find remedy for Lalu-Mamata hangover

Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. Image courtesy PIBTwo things Suresh Prabhu did not dwell upon in his speech and these two are the biggest challenges for the Railways going forward. These were the revenue projections for 2016-17 and revenues achieved in the current year 2015-16. After all, budget is about projections of revenues and expenditure based on the past year’s performance.

The reason he did not dwell on these two things is because this has been a challenging year for railways. The revenue target set for ’15-16 was at Rs 1,80,000 crore, what will be achieved is close to Rs 1,68,000 crore with a more than a month and a quarter to still go. The reason for this drop in achievement is a worry for not only the Railways but its business model. Initial number for the first half of ’15-16 showed a growth of just 2 percent in freight the reason attributed was drop in bulk commodity shipment particularly foodgrains. But commodity shipment also includes iron ore and coal a decline in which shows an overall slowdown in the economy. The growth in freight includes a rise in freight rates so in terms of the volume the growth is even lesser.

Now, the second part of the projection which Suresh Prabhu did not dwell upon is the targeted revenues for 2016-17 pegged at Rs 1,84,000 crore a 10 percent increase over the previous year.

Prabhu is hitting for the covers here and being really brave by setting such a high target. Hoping for a good monsoon and need for replenishment in the overflowing godowns to drive the freight for foodgrains.

Secondly, he is hoping for a major revival in demand for coal and iron ore freight. Thirdly, he is hoping that Railways will be able to change its business model on freight and attract automobile, white goods shipment etc. Or maybe all three. This is being brave against all the odds.

Remember the target for the operating ratio for 2015-16 was 88.5 percent and what has been achieved is closer to 90 percent. This is also due to some budgetary savings of Rs 8,720 crore. However, it is difficult to explain if its accounting play or real savings.

Getting his revenues and expenditure right is the first step towards ensuring sustainability of Railways and this was the goal Prabhu had set when he announced his last budget. This target seems to have been lost in the current speech of the railway minister.

Now that what he did not dwell on is clear, let us look at what he did talk about. He spent an inordinate amount of time for passenger amenities which was clearly a demand from the citizens. This was a major demand from citizens and it shows in a survey here. Addressing the needs of the citizens is a low capex and high impact initiative. Therefore he has announced a list of initiatives here and I won’t dwell on it here it has been captured well by the super active internet team at The Hindu newspaper.

Under Prabhu, railways has become more customer-centric on the passenger side, but more needs to be done on the freight side. There is a lot which has to be done on the freight side and I have written about it here and here. Now some of these ideas have been incorporated by Prabhu in his working in the Railways. But a very simple idea of making freight as simple as booking a passenger ticket will ensure that the backend automatically become more customer centric.

When an individual is allowed to book freight on the IRCTC site and his packet can be collected and delivered door to door you know that Railways has turned around. This is logistics muddle that should be the top most priority for the sustainability of Railways.

Currently, freight is treated as a second citizens in terms of customer service. The freight docks are dirty, the procedure manual and paperwork intensive, the entry and exit for lorries, and vehicles cumbersome. There is no last mile service or connectivity Railways offers or has. India Post, the only organization has the infrastructure and connectivity but lacks in customer service. There is a play here to bring these too organization together and form a joint offering for small sized packets and door to door delivery, branded and marketed aggressively. These are the big ideas that will help bring a culture of customer-centric approach in the freight business in railways.

The last and the most important aspect again as per his last budget is breaking the cycle of lack of investment plaguing the Railways for the last 15 years. Successive railway ministers from Lalu Prasad Yadav to Mamta Bannerjee had one simple formula to spend the capital budget in operational expenditure.

In simple words, the money that was given to them for building the house was used for buying daily groceries. They fooled people, media and even Harvard in believing that they were making the Railways profitable.

Now, Prabhu said in his speech that investment goal of Rs 1,00,011 crores has been met for 2015-16, and he has targeted another Rs 1,00,002 crore for 2016-17. These are ambitious targets and there are no concrete details on how to achieve them. Obviously, some of this capital expenditure will come from the main budget where he is seeking more than Rs 40,000 crore.

This is another area that needs more attention from a structuring point of view to attract low interest loans from Japan, US and even pension funds. The time has come for railways to do its own sovereign like offering for international markets, directly and not through IRFC to raise funds. Hopefully, more will happen here so that the target of investment can be met, if not it will remain a brave announcement.

Being brave in adversity is not easy, but being brave can be fool hardy if you are not planning in adversity. This maybe the time for some hard decisions too and it is time that they are taken to make Railways a better, leaner performance engine./*/[sc:afterFooterAd]

China space gravitational wave project to pay researchers $215K salary

China space gravitational wave project to pay researchers $215K salary

The collision of two black holes - a tremendously powerful event detected for the first time ever by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO - is seen in this still image from a computer simulation released in Washington February 11, 2016.

A China-led space gravitational wave detection project is recruiting researchers from around the world, chinanews.com reported.

The Tianqin project was initiated by Sun Yat-sen University in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong province, in July. It centres on research of key technologies in space gravitational wave detection.

To make the project more competitive, global talents in areas such as gravity theory, space gravity experiments and precision measurement are sought with an annual salary of up to 1 million yuan ($153,000), according to the report.

The detection of gravitational waves is a huge challenge, said Luo Jun, president of Sun Yat-sen University and head of the Tianqin project, adding that the project is a feasible plan and reflects the research capacity of China.

The 15-billion-yuan project aims to send wave-detection satellites into space in 15 to 20 years with construction of a research centre and observatory to be started soon.

Researchers will likely co-operate with counterparts from the European Space Agency's LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) Project, a gravitational wave observation plan initially co-developed by NASA and ESA in 2011.

Gravitational waves are tiny ripples in the fabric of space-time caused by violent astronomical events.

On Feb 11, scientists from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory in the US confirmed that they had detected gravitational waves caused by two black holes merging about 1.3 billion years ago. It was the first time the elusive phenomenon was directly detected since it was predicted by Albert Einstein 100 years ago.

The detection of gravitational waves is believed to help scientists understand more mysteries of the cosmos.

5G: How the world's fastest cellphone network & mobile internet is being built - GoFrnzy.com

5G: How the world's fastest cellphone network & mobile internet is being built

5G: How the world's fastest cellphone network & mobile internet is being built

GUILDFORD, BRITAIN: On the outskirts of this sleepy commuter town just south of London, plans are underway to build the fastest cellphone network in the world.

The work is being done at the University of Surrey, where a leafy campus is dotted with rundown brutalist-style buildings. Here, researchers and some of the world's biggest tech companies, including Samsung and Fujitsu, are collaborating to offer mobile Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than anything now available.

Their work on so-called fifth-generation, or 5G, wireless technology is set to be completed in early 2018 and would, for example, let students download entire movies to smartphones or tablets in less than five seconds, compared with as much as eight minutes with current fourth-generation, or 4G, technology.

Companies also could connect millions of devices — including smartwatches and tiny sensors on home appliances — to the new cellphone network, and automakers could potentially test driverless cars around the suburban campus.

"A lot of the technology already works in a laboratory environment," said Rahim Tafazolli, director of the university's research center that oversees the 5G project, which includes almost 70 powerful radio antennas around the 2-square-mile campus. "Now, we have to prove it works in real life."

The work by Tafazolli and his team puts them at the heart of a heated race. Fueled by people's insatiable appetite for accessing videos, social media and other entertainment on their mobile devices, many of the world's largest carriers, like AT&T and NTT DoCoMo of Japan, are rushing to be the first to offer customers this next-generation ultrafast wireless technology.

The competition has led to research worth billions of dollars from telecommunications equipment-makers like Ericsson of Sweden and Huawei of China, which are hoping to secure lucrative contracts to upgrade the mobile Internet infrastructure of operators like AT&T from the United States and China Mobile in Asia. Those plans have become even faster paced as tech giants including Google consider their own ambitions for the latest, and fastest, high-speed Internet.

"Everyone is rushing to demonstrate they are a leading player for 5G," said Bengt Nordstrom, co-founder of Northstream, a telecom consulting firm, in Stockholm.

The efforts around 5G will be on display at Mobile World Congress, a four-day tech and telecom event in Barcelona, Spain that begins on Monday. Most of the world's largest operators and device-makers like Samsung are expected to announce their latest wireless technology, including smartphones, wearable products and digital applications at the trade show.

Not to be outdone, telecom manufacturers also have announced glitzy demonstrations — including driverless cars, remote-controlled drones and autonomous robots balancing balls on tablets — to showcase their 5G credibility. The need to persuade carriers to buy the latest wireless technology has become ever more important as operators consider cutting investment plans in the face of a global economic downturn.

"If we miss the chance to make our networks relevant, it will be a disaster," said Ulf Ewaldsson, Ericsson's chief technology officer. "The billion-dollar question is, what will a 5G network look like?"

Despite companies' efforts to outspend each other, that question remains unanswered.

A global standard for 5G wireless technology will not be finished before 2019, at the earliest. Companies worldwide must agree on how their networks talk to each other, so users' mobile connections do not become patchy when traveling overseas. That involves lengthy negotiations over what type of radio waves the new technology should use, among other complicated global agreements, which can take years.

As a result, carriers, telecom equipment makers and tech companies are lobbying global-standard bodies and national lawmakers to promote their own technologies over rivals', according to industry executives and telecom analysts. Because of this jockeying, a widespread rollout of 5G networks is not expected until well into the next decade.

Some analysts question why carriers are focusing on the next generation of wireless technology when many parts of the world, particularly in emerging markets, still suffer from achingly slow mobile Internet access. And industry experts say mobile Internet speeds in much of the developed world, especially in places like South Korea, where connections are often comparable to traditional broadband, already meet people's needs.

"A lot of this is about carriers and equipment-makers looking for new ways to make money," said Thomas Husson, an analyst at Forrester Research in Paris. "Consumers shouldn't expect great things until after 2020."

These challenges have not stopped companies from staking a claim in hopes of being at the forefront of 5G.

That is particularly true ahead of major global sporting events like the Olympics and the World Cup, at which carriers and national governments want to promote their technological know-how. At the 2018 World Cup, which will be held in Russia, for instance, the local operators MegaFon and MTS are expected to test 5G-style services, including ultrafast mobile Internet, even without global standards in place.

The Korean mobile operator KT also plans to offer its own version of 5G technology at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and NTT DoCoMo has said it will have similar trials ready for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

"The only way of learning is by doing," said Mats Svardh, head of networks at the Scandinavian carrier TeliaSonera, which will test its own 5G technology in both Stockholm and Tallinn, Estonia, in 2018. "It's about putting pressure on ourselves to move forward with specifics, not just theories."

US carriers have also jumped on the 5G bandwagon, partly to offer people new services as current mobile speeds have become relatively interchangeable between major operators nationwide.

Last year, Verizon Wireless announced that it would start testing new wireless technology in 2016 in order to offer new services, including potentially ultrafast mobile Internet, sometime next year. Last month, AT&T countered with its own tests — expected to start in Austin, Texas, by the end of 2016 — that could offer mobile speeds roughly 100 times faster than its current offering.

"We will be ready when it's ready," said John Donovan, AT&T's chief strategy officer, who added that traditional rivals like Verizon and new arrivals like Google could eventually compete to offer 5G services. "Everywhere you don't solve a problem, someone else might step in."

For Tafazolli, of the University of Surrey, whose team started working on 5G in late 2011, these battles have led to an increasing number of companies offering support — including the use of high-speed computer servers, costly radio antennas and millions of dollars of financing to research and build the next-generation wireless network on his college campus, he said. Their primary goal: to test their latest technology in a real-world setting.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg both woos and slams phone industry

BARCELONA: Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg on Monday tried to extend an olive branch to mobile phone companies, on which the popular social network company increasingly relies, but which are also among his biggest critics.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg both woos and slams phone industry

Speaking for the third straight year to an annual gathering of telecom executives at the Mobile World Congress here, Zuckerberg sought to show his company could be a valuable, if truculent, ally to the wireless industry.

He described a new project Facebook is working on with major telecom players, including Nokia, Deutsche Telekom , SK Telecom and Intel to help rapidly build far faster mobile networks at lower costs.

But while listing the various ways in which Facebook was prepared to help network operators contend with spiralling consumer appetites for data, he also criticized and made more demands on the industry.

Zuckerberg challenged the priorities for next-generation 5G networks, which the industry is gearing up to deliver around 2020. He called them "faster connections for rich people" and said the companies should make more effort to "finish the job of making sure that everyone in the world gets Internet access."

More than 4 billion people have no access to the Internet, he noted.

Telecom operators complain that companies like Facebook and Google Inc that offer data-heavy mobile services are effectively free-loading on the big investments they must make to keep fixed-line and mobile networks from becoming overloaded.

"Facebook has always had a love-hate relationship with carriers," Forrester Research analyst Thomas Husson said after Zuckerberg's comments.

Further complicating his relationships with the telecom industry, Zuckerberg said video would be the next big driver for Facebook growth, putting more pressure on existing networks. Its users watch more than 100 million hours of video daily.

While criticizing the industry for failing to do more to reach unconnected populations, Zuckerberg is a leading proponent of new virtual reality cameras that he said could be a killer app for 5G but which would place vast new demands on networks.

He also defended Facebook's Free Basics program, through which the company works with operators in emerging markets to offer a pared-back free Internet service to reach consumers who cannot afford data plans.

The Indian government introduced rules blocking Internet services from having different pricing policies for accessing different parts of the web, effectively shuttering the Free Basics program in that country, one of Facebook's most important emerging markets.

Zuckerberg is kicking off a tour of Europe on Monday that includes a town hall meeting in Berlin on Thursday.

Facebook has faced criticism in Germany in recent months from politicians and regulators over its privacy practices and a slow response to anti-immigrant postings by neo-Nazi sympathizers on the popular social network.

NSA Data Center Experiencing 300 Million Hacking Attempts Per Day

NSA Data Center Experiencing 300 Million Hacking Attempts Per Day

nsa-data-center-hack

Utah State computer systems are experiencing a massive cyber attack on up to 300 Million Hacking attempts per day due to National Security Agency’s (NSA) data center in the state.

Yes, 300,000,000 hacking attempts in a day!

According to the statistical survey, it is evident that the computer systems in the US State of Utah began to experience the hacking attack a few years back, precisely, soon after the NSA revelationsby global surveillance whistleblower Edward Snowden.

It is a less-known fact that the NSA has built its new data center near the city of Bluffdale, Utah. However, a couple of years back, when Snowden revealed the presence of the data center, the attacks have constantly been going on.

The PRISM spying program by Big Brothers at NSA might have shifted the attention of hackers for the retaliation against mass-surveillance and flared up this heightened cyber attacks against the spying agency.

According to Utah Commissioner of public safety, Keith Squires, as quoted by KUTV:

"In 2010, my IT director was letting me know that the number of attacks we were averaging a day was between 25,000 to 80,000. We had peaks in the past year or so that were over 300,000,000 a day."

Additionally, advanced weapons systems at Hill Air Force Base and other tech companies in Utah could also be the reason for this fueling cyber attacks.

Trace Route

The Security officers had identified the sudden influx of IP traffic traced into foreign IP ranges and said the incident would be a model of a botnet attack.

The botnet network scans for the technical glitches in the communication pathways to infect the system, as per its Command and Control (C&C) instructions.

In an attempt to minimize the attacking vector, Utah Security Officer had blocked the IP addresses from China, Russia, and Indonesia.

In the majority of cases, hackers are trying to gain a single access by many tactical ploys that could lead them to land into the NSA mainframes./*/[sc:afterFooterAd]

Funny Naughty Joke – Naukar aur Malik

Live| Jat quota stir in Haryana: Police station, petrol pump set afire

Tension prevailed in Meham in Rohtak district, which has been worst hit by the Jat stir for quota, after a mob of about 2000-2500 people went on the rampage setting on fire a police station, a petrol pump, a government building and a banquet hall on Saturday.

“The police station has been set on fire by a group of about 2000-2500 people. They went on rampage today and also set on fire a petrol pump, a government building and a banquet hall,” sub inspector and SHO of Meham police station, Rajender Singh said.

He said the situation was tense in the area and additional forces have been summoned to bring the situation under control. The Army is out in the district to bring the situation under control.

In another incident Jhajjar district, a mob pelted stones at the house of senior Haryana Minister OP Dhankar on Saturday afternoon.

“The mob threw stones at Dhankar’s house, but no one was injured,” a police official said.

Dhankar is among the prominent Jat politicians in the state.

The official said tension prevailed in the area and police and paramilitary forces were trying to bring the situation under control.

Earlier in the day, the Budha Khera Railway Station in Jind district was set on fire by some unidentified people as the Jat stir for reservation in jobs and education continued for the seventh day.

The record room, furniture and other articles were set on fire at the railway station, which falls on the Jind-Panipat rail section, police said.

The Indian Army is conducting a flag march in Haryana’s violence-hit Rohtak, where three people were allegedly killed and 78 others injured in firing and clash between security personnel and Jats demanding reservation in jobs and education.

The army could not enter Rohtak initially as protesters had put up blockades at several places, forcing the authorities to air drop them using helicopters.

The army issued a warning asking people to remain inside their homes following the shoot-at-sight orders issued on Friday night in the tension-gripped city, where several private and government properties and vehicles were set ablaze by protesters.

Jat protesters blocked the railway tracks during their agitation in Sonipat on Saturday. (PTI)

Sources said the army will conduct its flag march in the peaceful areas of the city and will later reach the violence-affected areas near Delhi Road, D Park and Sector 14.

A contingent of the army also took out a flag march on Saturday morning in Bhiwani. The administration has asked people to stay at homes, official sources said.

Incidents of violence and arson continued at several places during the night even as prohibitory orders remained in place in many places including Hisar, Jhajjar, Jind, Kaithal and Panipat.

Road, rail blockade continues

Normal life remained disrupted as protesting Jats continued to block roads and rail routes, affecting the supplies of essential commodities to Rohtak, Jind, Bhiwani and other parts of the state.

Members of the Jat community blocked the Rohtak-Jhajjar road as about 600 people gathered at the demonstration site near Sampla. The protesters also set afire a Haryana roadways bus near Kalanaur town of the district early in the morning.

Reports said they have also started blocking roads in several parts of the northern districts including Radaur at Yamunanagar, Indiri at Karnal and Ladwa at Kurukshetra.

Rail services are severely hampered on the Delhi-Ambala, Delhi-Amritsar, Delhi-Hisar-Fazilka route, and Hisar-Dhuri sections as agitating Jats squatted on railway tracks at few places.

As many as 72 trains have been cancelled while 22 have been partially cancelled by the railway authorities. A number of passenger trains, long distance including super fast passing through or originating in Haryana will remain cancelled on Saturday, railway authorities said.

Jat protesters smashed a vehicle during their agitation in Rohtak on Friday. (PTI)

Northern Railway’s chief public relations officer Neeraj Sharma told ANI that routes passing through Panipat, Rohtak and Rewadi have been closed. He said there have been fire incidents at Jhajjar station and at a halt near Sonipat adding that tracks have been damaged at some places.

Nearly 550 trains were either cancelled or diverted since the agitation began a week ago.

Curfew, shoot-at-sight orders

The agitation escalated and turned violent soon after an all-party meeting held by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday issued an appeal for calling off the stir. After the meeting, Khattar had said the state government will prepare a draft bill for giving reservation to Jats and that suggestions have also been sought from all parties in this regard.

Jat leaders rejected the offer made by the state government and said that the stir would continue till their demand is met.

“There is no solid offer made by Haryana government. BJP government is just trying to befool Jats as its intentions with regard to giving reservation to Jats is not clean,” Jat leader Yashapal Malik said on Friday.

“The government should first bring an ordinance and then bring a bill in Haryana Vidhan Sabha for giving reservation to Jats. If the government does it, then it will be acceptable to us,” he said.

The Haryana government had called the army in nine districts and imposed curfew and shoot-at-sight orders in Bhiwani and Rohtak districts after protests by the Jat community turned violent on Friday.

The protestor was killed in Rohtak when Border Security Force (BSF) personnel had opened fire in “self-defence” after someone from the mob fired at and injured a BSF jawan.

The Centre also sent in 3,300 paramilitary personnel as rampaging mobs held policemen captive, vandalised a mall and set ablaze several government and private properties including the houses of a minister and an MLA from the ruling BJP.

Protesters block the Gurgaon- Alwar National Highway near Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Chowk in Gurgaon during their agitation. (PTI)

Mobs had held some policemen captive and set on fire the house of state’s finance minister Abhimanyu and several government and private properties in Rohtak, Jhajjar, Hansi and several other parts of the state.

Protestors pelted stones at the residence of a BJP MP Raj Kumar Saini in Kaithal on Friday evening, police said. Around 50 persons attacked Saini’s residence, damaging window panes.

The BJP parliamentarian had earlier expressed objection over giving reservation to Jats and even threatened to resign if there was “any loss” to reservation quota for OBCs.

Protesters had also targeted police and private vehicles, buildings housing offices, including two toll plazas at Hansi in Hissar district and near Rohtak, both located on the Delhi-Hisar-Fazilka National Highway.

Schools were ordered to be closed across the state and mobile internet services were suspended in almost all the districts

Alzheimer drug could help smokers kick the butt

NEW YORK: A class of medication used to improve cognitive impairments from Alzheimer's disease has the potential to help smokers to permanently kick the butt, a new study says.

Despite several safe drug therapies available to help smokers quit, three-quarters report relapsing within six months of a quit attempt, the study pointed out.

In a study consisting of a rat trial and a human trial, the researchers studied the effects of two acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, or AChEIs, called galantamine and donepezil on overall nicotine intake.

The researchers found that pretreating the rodents with an AChEI decreased their nicotine consumption.

For both drugs "we were able to show a reduction in total nicotine self-administered," said one of the researchers Rebecca Ashare, University of Pennsylvania in the US.

"At the doses shown to reduce nicotine self-administration, the AChEIs did not make our animals sick," Schmidt noted.

The findings are promising, particularly given that those who do not smoke during that first crucial week are 32 times more likely to quit smoking permanently, the researchers said.

In the brain, the neurotransmitter called acetylcholine is important to cognitive functions like learning and short-term memory.

When nicotine enters the body, it binds to the same receptors in the brain that acetylcholine binds to, resulting in smoking's rewarding and reinforcement effects.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors increase acetylcholine levels in the brain and, in effect, substitute nicotine's effects, the study explained.

The findings were detailed in the journal Translational Psychiatry.
